Overview

Convenient, private, and appropriate sexual and reproductive health information to men, women, and youth (aged 15 to 24) may help increase the use of contraceptives and address these challenges in the coming years.

Context

Countries around the world face many sexual and reproductive health challenges, including high fertility and maternal mortality rates, high rates of pregnancy among youth, and high HIV and STI prevalence. Associated with these challenges is the low use of contraceptives.

“Mobile for Reproductive Health” an SMS application, providing sexual and reproductive health information at the user’s request has launched in Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda. A newer, second generation App on an Android Platform may provide a better user experience and allow users to navigate more easily between the different modules on contraceptive methods, sex and pregnancy, pregnancy prevention, HIV, STIs, and puberty.

Challenge

Replace the SMS application with a new mobile application on a Smartphone that stores information on the phone and eliminates the need for SMS requests for specific information.

Solution

An m4RH app that can be downloaded onto a smartphone will cater to the growing number of smart phone users throughout Africa, particularly among young people. Smartphone penetration in is growing.

Results

The m4RH mobile app has the capacity to provide effective sexual and reproductive health information to individuals worldwide. The m4RH app is an accessible, convenient, free, and private tool to obtain contraceptive method information.
